Spending the night at Christchurch Airport is a limited option due to one of the strictest overnight policies in New Zealand. The terminal is not intended to serve as accommodation, and security staff enforce rigorous rules to maintain order and the functionality of the building during the night.

Overnight stay policy

Only passengers who meet specific requirements are allowed to remain inside the terminal: having arrived after 10:30 pm on commercial transport and holding a flight scheduled before 8:30 am the following day. Proof of travel (itineraries or boarding passes) must be presented if requested by security staff.

Strict rule: Under no circumstances are passengers permitted to lie down on the floor or on the seating. Remaining seated is the only allowed position. Security staff conduct regular patrols and will wake anyone attempting to sleep or lie down.

Rest areas and comfort

The seating available in public areas includes armrests, preventing their use as improvised beds. The environment is usually cold due to the air conditioning system, so it is essential to have warm clothing if you plan to wait overnight. Lounges offer greater comfort, but all close after the last flight and are not available for overnight stays.

There are no retail outlets or dining options operating 24 hours within the terminal. It is recommended to purchase food and drinks before venues close (around 8:00 pm – 9:00 pm). However, basic services such as free and unlimited Wi-Fi, cash machines and device charging stations remain available.

Hygiene and baggage

The airport provides free public showers located on Level 1, near the food court, which are accessible for as long as the terminal remains open. On the other hand, the luggage storage service at Relay closes at 9:00 pm, so it is not possible to store or collect luggage overnight.
