Required documentation to travel by plane

Before heading to the airport, it is essential to review all required documentation in advance to avoid inconveniences that may lead to delays or even denial of boarding. Basic items to check include: a valid identity document or passport, air ticket or booking reference, boarding pass (printed or digital), cash and international credit or debit cards, visa (if applicable), vaccination certificates, and any other documents required by the destination or transit country.

Depending on the destination and the current health or immigration context, some countries may require additional documentation, such as specific vaccination certificates, health forms, or immigration declarations completed prior to travel. These requirements may also apply to transit or connecting countries.

For domestic flights and in certain regions with agreements between neighboring countries, travel may be allowed using only a national identity document. For international flights outside these agreements, a valid passport is mandatory and, in many cases, a visa and proof of onward or return travel are also required. Lack of a return or onward ticket may prevent boarding or entry into the destination country.

Some countries may also require additional documentation, such as invitation letters, confirmed accommodation reservations, proof of sufficient financial means, or prior entry registrations.

In case of doubt, especially when traveling to a country with specific requirements or particular political, health, or immigration conditions, it is advisable to consult in advance with the airline, a travel agency, or directly with the embassy or consulate of the destination country, where official and up-to-date information is provided.

When traveling with minors, it is essential to verify specific requirements. If a minor is traveling alone, with only one parent, or with a third party, a travel authorization issued by parents or legal guardians is often mandatory, in addition to valid identification documents.

Failure to present the required documentation for the destination may result in denial of boarding or refusal of entry at immigration control.

If the amount of cash you are carrying exceeds the equivalent of 10,000 euros or U.S. dollars, according to international regulations, you must declare it and, in some cases, justify the origin of the funds with tax or banking documentation, both when leaving and when returning to your country.

In certain destinations, it is also recommended to declare new electronic devices before entering the boarding area or the country, as failure to do so may result in import taxes being charged upon return.

The flight acceptance deadline refers to the minimum time before the scheduled departure by which the passenger must have completed check-in, checked baggage, passed security controls, and be present in the boarding area. Airlines assume no responsibility if the passenger arrives after this deadline.

As a general guideline, it is recommended to arrive at the airport at least 1.5 hours before domestic flights and between 2 and 3 hours before international flights, unless otherwise specified by the airline. At airports with high passenger volumes or enhanced security measures, these times may be longer.

Passengers should consider possible lines at check-in counters, security checkpoints, and immigration controls, especially during peak travel periods. It is also advisable to allow extra time for transportation to the airport, taking into account traffic conditions or other potential delays.

For security reasons, airports may conduct more frequent or more thorough checks of both passengers and carry-on or checked baggage. Therefore, it is recommended to always keep your boarding pass (printed or on your mobile device) and personal documentation readily available, and to strictly comply with the boarding times and procedures set by the airline.
