Useful Tips » Baggage Restrictions

General Considerations

The passenger must check his luggage at the counter assigned to the airline. In turn, the boarding pass and the luggage check will be delivered there. In case of checking in a backpack, some airports may tell you to dispatch it in another sector because it has many straps that make it difficult to transfer through the belt.

For security reasons, UNDER NO CONCEPT should you guard, transport or dispatch luggage belonging to unknown persons. No matter how kindly they ask or beg.

If you only have a carry on, several companies allow you to check in online, print your boarding pass or download it to your mobile phone and go directly to the boarding area. Some airports also have machines where you can manage and print your boarding pass (self-service check in).

For sanitary and protocol reasons, you should not forget the masks and the hydroalcoholic gel.

Checked Baggage limit

Each airline has its policy of weight limits and number of packages. Depending on the airline, type of ticket (basic, economy, business class) and destination, the baggage allowance may vary. They generally range between 1 and 2 packages of 20kg to 30kg. It is also recommended to consult with the company beforehand, so as not to have surprises. If the type of ticket is basic or economy class, baggage clearance usually has to be paid as an additional fee. For their part, low-cost airlines normally do NOT include billing for packages in the ticket fare. This is paid separately and per package, in most cases up to 15 kg or 20 kg per package.

Excess baggage

In the event of excess baggage limit imposed by the airline, you may dispatch more weight than allowed or another package, paying the amount that is established as excess baggage. As this is paid at the time of weigh-in, it is recommended to have cash or another payment mechanism available and accepted by the company on hand.

Hand luggage

In addition to the checked baggage, the passenger is allowed to carry certain objects of little weight and volume as hand luggage. Normally the weight limits are between 8 and 10 kg and the dimensions are 55 cm x 40 cm x 20 cm. Although some low cost companies only allow even lower weight limits.

In turn, some airlines (both regular and low cost) allow a second cabin luggage smaller than the first (35 x 20 x 20 cm), where you can carry a coat, a laptop or a duty free bag. When in doubt, it is suggested to consult previously with the airline, about the limitations of dimensions, weights and packages both in the dispatched luggage and in the carry-on.

It should be noted that in the basic class flights, in most cases only a coat, a laptop or duty free bag is included. But the right to hand luggage must be paid as an additional.

Limitations and exclusion of liability

Airlines can refuse to transport certain items that due to their size, shape, weight or characteristics cannot be considered as baggage. For greater security, it is suggested not to include perishable, fragile items, valuables (money, jewelry, electronic items, etc.), medicines, documents, keys, etc. in checked luggage. Some companies are not responsible for the integrity or disappearance of these items.

Prohibited items in hand luggage

For security reasons, there are a number of objects that are forbidden to take with you on the plane and therefore must be declared as dispatch baggage as long as they are allowed. Some of them are; Weapons of all kinds, sharp objects, blunt objects, explosive or flammable elements, toxic or chemical substances. If you carry liquid or cosmetic items, you should store them in transparent bags, and in the case of liquid substances, not more than 100 ml.

Drinks or perishable or unopened food in its original container are not allowed to pass the checkpoint. Once past the checkpoint, you can buy food or drinks at the duty free and put them on the plane. In the case of fresh food, some countries do not allow it (even when buying them in the shipping area). Check with your airline.
If the passenger is transporting firearms, they must go to the weapons office at the departure airport to obtain the necessary authorization, in addition to having prior authorization and filling out some forms. Arms and ammunition must be packed in a suitable case and will be returned to you at the weapons office at the arrival airport.

In turn, in the control area, those who carry devices such as tablets, cameras, mobiles or laptops (notebooks) are usually asked to pass them through the ray tape outside of the case or bag and in a separate tray , along with keys, belt, documentation, purse or wallet.

Certain electronic equipment, such as laptops or cell phones, can interfere with aircraft systems and affect flight safety. In most cases you should use them in airplane mode, at least at the times when the crew commander requests it (usually they are at takeoff and landing.

Pets and domestic animals

It is convenient that the passenger, when making the reservation or purchase of the ticket, consult with the operator or the airline, about the requirements for the transport of pets or domestic animals.

Luggage Incidents

The airline is responsible for the damage caused in the event of destruction, loss or damage to checked baggage when the event that caused the deterioration occurred on board the aircraft or while the checked baggage is in the custody of the company.

However, the company will not be responsible to the extent that the damage is due to the nature or defect of the luggage. In the case of low-cost companies, most do not include luggage insurance in the standard price, and it is offered at an additional charge.

You are also liable for damage caused by delay in the transport of luggage, unless you prove that all measures that were reasonably necessary to avoid the damage were taken or that it was impossible for them to take such measures.

It is of vital importance that in the case of incidents with checked baggage, it is called loss, total or partial destruction or delay; the passenger makes the corresponding protest at that time. When in doubt, check with the information office of the venue for assistance. To prevent these inconveniences, carry a change of clothes in your handbag. In this sense, it is also convenient to have some travel insurance that includes damage or loss of luggage.
