Car Hire at Shanghai Hongqiao airport (SHA)
List of car rental agencies that operate within the Shanghai Hongqiao airport (SHA)
Subject to change: schedules, listed companies and contact details may change due to commercial decisions or operational updates, so it is always advisable to check availability on the official website of the car rental company before booking.
Car hire desks are mainly located in the transport centre adjacent to Terminal 2. Although self-drive options are available, due to strict local driving licence regulations, chauffeur-driven vehicle services are very commonly used.
Car hire companies
- Hertz: Office on Level 1 of Terminal 2, available 24 hours a day.
- Avis: Available at the airport with 24-hour service.
- eHi: Office on the ground floor of the P6 car park at Terminal 2.
- Zuche: Available at the airport transport centre.
Note: Car hire desks are concentrated in the Ground Transportation Centre and in the arrivals halls of both terminals. Advance booking is recommended, especially during peak travel seasons (Chinese New Year and Golden Week).
Requirements for hiring a vehicle in China
Hiring and driving a vehicle in mainland China involves important legal considerations that should be taken into account:
- Driving licence: China does not recognise the International Driving Permit (IDP). To drive legally, it is mandatory to hold a driving licence issued by the People's Republic of China.
- Temporary permit: Foreign nationals may apply for a temporary driving permit (valid for up to 3 months) at designated traffic police offices by presenting their passport and a translated version of their home country driving licence. Some airport car hire agencies may assist with this process.
- Documentation: Valid passport with a valid visa and an international credit card for the security deposit.
- Minimum age: Generally 21 years old, although premium vehicles may require a minimum age of 25.

5 tips for renting a car abroad
- Make sure your driver's license is valid in the destination country. Some countries also require an International Driving Permit (IDP). Keep in mind that the IDP is not valid on its own: it must always be carried together with your national driver's license.
- Check the documents and insurance required by local traffic laws, and what coverage is included in your rental (collision damage waiver, third-party liability, deductible).
- Learn the traffic rules of the destination country: speed limits on highways and city streets, right of way at intersections without traffic lights, blood alcohol limits, tolls, etc.
- Check which side of the road traffic drives on, and whether the steering wheel is on the same side as in your home country.
- Know what to do if you are involved in a traffic accident: who to call, what to document and how to report it to the rental company.
