Requirements for Hiring a Vehicle
To hire and drive a vehicle in Beijing, a number of legal requirements must be met. The most important are:
- Temporary Driving Permit: Foreign visitors cannot drive using their foreign driving licence. It is mandatory to obtain a Temporary Driving Permit, valid for up to 3 months. This permit is issued on the spot and does not require a medical examination or written test.
- Application Location: The Temporary Driving Permit can be obtained at the service office located in Terminal 3, first floor, opposite Gate 7. Opening hours are Monday to Sunday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.
- Required Documents: Passport, original foreign driving licence, a certified Chinese translation of the driving licence issued by an authorised translation agency in China, two recent 1-inch (2.5 cm) passport-style photographs, and a residential address in China (hotel address accepted).
In addition, hire companies usually require:
- Minimum age: Generally 25 years old, although some companies may rent to drivers aged 21 and over with an additional surcharge.
- International credit card in the name of the main driver for the security deposit.
- Printed booking voucher if an online pre-booking has been made.

5 tips for renting a car abroad
- Make sure your driver's license is valid in the destination country. Some countries also require an International Driving Permit (IDP). Keep in mind that the IDP is not valid on its own: it must always be carried together with your national driver's license.
- Check the documents and insurance required by local traffic laws, and what coverage is included in your rental (collision damage waiver, third-party liability, deductible).
- Learn the traffic rules of the destination country: speed limits on highways and city streets, right of way at intersections without traffic lights, blood alcohol limits, tolls, etc.
- Check which side of the road traffic drives on, and whether the steering wheel is on the same side as in your home country.
- Know what to do if you are involved in a traffic accident: who to call, what to document and how to report it to the rental company.
