Fua'amotu International Airport (TBU)

Fua'amotu International Airport (TBU) is the main gateway to the Kingdom of Tonga. Originally opened in 1942 as a military base, it is now a vital connection point in the South Pacific, operating direct flights to international destinations such as Auckland, Sydney, Nadi and Apia, as well as serving as the central hub for domestic flights to the islands of Vava'u, Ha'apai and 'Eua.

Terminals

The airport has two separate passenger terminals located approximately 1 km apart:

• International Terminal: Located in the northern sector, it handles all arrivals and departures of international flights.
• Domestic Terminal: Situated in the southern sector, dedicated exclusively to internal flights to the islands of the Vava'u, Ha'apai, 'Eua groups and the Niuas.

In the international terminal, there is an information and passenger assistance desk in the arrivals area. There are also tourism offices providing advice on transport and accommodation on the island.

 Location

The airport is located on the southern side of the main island, Tongatapu, 20 km (12.4 miles) south of Tonga's capital, Nuku'alofa.

The airport features open-air parking areas conveniently located in front of both terminal buildings. These areas allow quick pedestrian access to the check-in and arrivals zones.

Short- and long-term stays

The car park is designed for both short stops for passenger pick-up and drop-off, as well as long-term stays. As it is a moderately busy airport, advance booking is generally not required, and spaces are usually available at all times.

Tariffs and Payment

The pricing structure is managed by Tonga Airports Limited. Payments are usually made in cash in the local currency (Pa'anga - TOP) to security staff or at control points upon exiting the premises. It is advisable to check the current rates upon entry, as they may vary depending on the length of stay.

Facilities for passengers with special needs

Fua'amotu International Airport provides basic services for passengers with reduced mobility or special needs. However, the infrastructure is limited compared to major international airports.

Special assistance

Passengers requiring special assistance or a wheelchair must notify their airline at least 48 hours in advance before the flight date. The airline will coordinate the assistance service within the terminal and during boarding and disembarkation.

Accessibility in the terminal

The terminal has access ramps and adapted toilets for passengers with reduced mobility. However, the infrastructure may not meet international accessibility standards.

Parking: There are designated parking spaces for people with disabilities in the airport car park.

Recommendation: It is advisable to arrive at the airport with sufficient time (at least 2 hours before the flight) to manage any additional needs and coordinate assistance with airline staff at the check-in desk.
