Passenger Guide

Santos Dumont Airport (SDU) is the downtown airport of Rio de Janeiro, famous for its privileged location next to Guanabara Bay and its proximity to the city's financial and tourist district. Inaugurated on November 30, 1936, it was Brazil's first civil airport. Currently, it operates under strict government regulation that limits its annual capacity to divert international and long-haul flights to Galeão Airport, with SDU concentrating almost exclusively on the "Air Bridge" (Ponte Aérea) to São Paulo-Congonhas and short-haul regional flights.

Terminal
The airport complex consists of a main passenger terminal, noted for its historic modernist architecture (the original building was a pioneer of its style in Brazil) integrated with modern boarding areas (the glass "fingers").
Operating Hours: The terminal opens to the public from 4:00 am to 11:00 pm.
Important note: The airport has strict operational restrictions due to noise; there are no takeoffs or landings between 11:00 pm and 6:00 am.
Annual Passenger Traffic: Approximately 6.1 million passengers in 2024.
Context: This figure reflects the "operational cap" policy implemented by the federal government in January 2024, which limited traffic to 6.5 million annually to decongest the terminal and reactivate Galeão International Airport.
Information Points
There are Infraero (the state operator) information counters located in the arrivals hall and the departure lounge. Staff usually wear green or blue uniforms with the company logo.
Location
The airport is located 4 km (2.8 miles) east of downtown Rio de Janeiro.

Reduced Mobility
The terminal features ramps, elevators, adapted restrooms, and tactile flooring (podotactile paving) that guides from the curb to the service counters.
Boarding and Disembarking:
Although the terminal has glass boarding bridges (jet bridges), many operations at Santos Dumont are carried out at remote stands. For these cases, the airport has Ambulifts (lift vehicles) that allow boarding and disembarking the aircraft safely and with dignity, without using stairs.
Requesting Assistance: It is mandatory to inform the airline about special needs at the time of ticket purchase or at least 48 hours in advance of the flight.
Neurodiversity (Autism/ASD)
Sunflower Lanyard: Infraero staff is trained to recognize the "Sunflower Lanyard". This badge alerts to non-visible disabilities, ensuring patient and priority treatment.
Sensory Room: Santos Dumont has a Sensory Accommodation Room located in the departure lounge. It is a space with dim lighting, soft furniture, and soundproofing, designed so that neurodivergent passengers can wait for their flight away from the noise and intense stimuli of the terminal.
