List of car rental agencies that operate within the Hong Kong airport (HKG)
Subject to change: schedules, listed companies and contact details may change due to commercial decisions or operational updates, so it is always advisable to check availability on the official website of the car rental company before booking.
Within Hong Kong Airport, vehicle hire services are primarily focused on chauffeur-driven cars and private limousines, ideal for direct transfers to hotels, residential areas or destinations in mainland China. Service counters are located on Level 5 of the Arrivals Hall, within the transport services area.
If you prefer to drive yourself, there are search platforms allowing you to compare options and book in advance so that the vehicle can be delivered either at the airport or at strategic locations within the city. Search and book your vehicle here.
Requirements for hiring a vehicle
To drive a hire car in Hong Kong, you must comply with the following general requirements imposed by most agencies:
- Minimum age: At least 21 years old (some companies require drivers to be 25 for higher vehicle categories or apply “young driver” surcharges).
- Driving licence: A valid licence held for a minimum of 2 years.
- International Driving Permit (IDP): Mandatory if your original licence is not written in English or Chinese. Even with licences in English, many agencies request it as additional legal support.
- Passport: Original and valid identification document.
- Credit card: A card in the name of the main driver for the security deposit hold or bond.
Please note that driving in Hong Kong is on the left-hand side of the road, and parking in central areas may be expensive and limited, so planning routes in advance is recommended.

5 tips for renting a car abroad
- Make sure your driver's license is valid in the destination country. Some countries also require an International Driving Permit (IDP). Keep in mind that the IDP is not valid on its own: it must always be carried together with your national driver's license.
- Check the documents and insurance required by local traffic laws, and what coverage is included in your rental (collision damage waiver, third-party liability, deductible).
- Learn the traffic rules of the destination country: speed limits on highways and city streets, right of way at intersections without traffic lights, blood alcohol limits, tolls, etc.
- Check which side of the road traffic drives on, and whether the steering wheel is on the same side as in your home country.
- Know what to do if you are involved in a traffic accident: who to call, what to document and how to report it to the rental company.
