Car Hire at Guangzhou Baiyun airport (CAN)
List of car rental agencies that operate within the Guangzhou Baiyun airport (CAN)
Subject to change: schedules, listed companies and contact details may change due to commercial decisions or operational updates, so it is always advisable to check availability on the official website of the car rental company before booking.
The car hire market within the territory of the People’s Republic of China is subject to very strict regulations for international drivers. As the country is not a signatory to international road traffic conventions, it is not possible to drive a vehicle using an International Driving Permit (IDP). For this reason, the vast majority of providers operating at the airport require the mandatory hire of a vehicle with a private chauffeur included, unless the passenger holds formal residency and a driving licence issued directly by the Chinese government.
The customer service centres of authorised transport agencies are distributed throughout the airport complex at the following specific locations:
Terminal 1
- Departure Hall (International Arrivals): Desk located next to Gate 4. Usually operates during daytime and evening hours (from 7:00 am to 11:00 pm).
- Lower Level (Floor -1): General service centre integrated with the underground transport access area (from 8:00 am to 12:00 am).
- Arrivals Zone B: Service office located near Gate 4 (from 5:00 pm to 1:00 am).
- Arrivals Zone A: Additional assistance area for transit passengers (from 9:00 am to 1:00 am).
Terminal 2
- Ground Transportation Centre (GTC): Unified counters strategically located opposite the main access points of Gates 51 and 53. The Gate 53 service point operates 24 hours a day, while the remaining counters follow a standard operating schedule (from 9:00 am to 1:00 am).
- Arrivals Hall Area: Passenger assistance module positioned opposite Gate 42 for domestic arrivals (from 7:00 am to 11:00 pm).
Terminal 3
- Eastern sector of the international arrivals area, operating 24 hours a day.
Requirements for Hiring a Vehicle
To arrange a vehicle hire service within the airport complex, you will need to present the following standard documentation:
- Valid Passport: International identity document with the corresponding entry stamp or visa for the country.
- International Credit Card: Mandatory requirement imposed by transport companies in order to process the security deposit or guarantee for the requested services.
- People’s Republic of China Driving Licence: Essential requirement only if you intend to drive the vehicle independently. Foreign driving licences, certified translations and international permits are not recognised by the local traffic authorities.
- Chauffeur Service Included: If you do not possess the local documentation mentioned above, you must mandatorily arrange the contract under the vehicle-with-driver modality provided by the authorised agency, confirming the planned travel itinerary in advance.

5 tips for renting a car abroad
- Make sure your driver's license is valid in the destination country. Some countries also require an International Driving Permit (IDP). Keep in mind that the IDP is not valid on its own: it must always be carried together with your national driver's license.
- Check the documents and insurance required by local traffic laws, and what coverage is included in your rental (collision damage waiver, third-party liability, deductible).
- Learn the traffic rules of the destination country: speed limits on highways and city streets, right of way at intersections without traffic lights, blood alcohol limits, tolls, etc.
- Check which side of the road traffic drives on, and whether the steering wheel is on the same side as in your home country.
- Know what to do if you are involved in a traffic accident: who to call, what to document and how to report it to the rental company.
