Connecting at Guangzhou Baiyun airport

Connection time calculator, immigration and security, and how to move between terminals at CAN.

How connections work at CAN

At Guangzhou Baiyun airport, passengers connecting between two international flights can usually stay in the transit area without going through immigration.

The airport has 3 terminals or concourses (Terminal 1, Terminal 2, Terminal 3). They are not connected after security: changing means going through security again.

Connecting passengers go through a transfer security screening.

Terminals / concourses: Terminal 1, Terminal 2, Terminal 3

Getting between them: Free 24-hour inter-terminal shuttle bus (landside), Guangzhou Metro Line 3, and Guangdong Intercity Railway

Terminals are physically separate buildings. Transferring between them requires taking landside transport (shuttle bus, metro, or intercity railway) and re-clearing security.

Connections between domestic and international flights require clearing border entry/exit inspection. Eligible international-to-international transfer passengers remaining airside within 24 hours bypass full border inspection.

  • On China Southern through-tickets, international-to-domestic baggage is transferred automatically without manual collection at baggage claim.
  • International-to-international transit passengers staying airside can process transit formalities on Level 2 without going through full border control.
  • Eligible China Southern passengers with layovers over 8 hours can claim free transit accommodation at the service desk near Door 50 on Level 1 of Terminal 2.

Estimate based on typical times at this airport, not your airline's official minimum connection time. Immigration and security lines change with the time of day and season. On a single ticket, the airline must rebook you if you miss the connection; on separate tickets, it does not.
