Requirements for renting a car in Mexico

The necessary documents to rent a car are: valid passport, valid driver's license (International Driving Permit is not mandatory if the license is in Latin characters), and a credit card in the main driver's name with sufficient balance for the security deposit (a physical card is usually required; debit or prepaid cards may not be accepted).

Permit fee for driving outside the airport:

Some agencies may charge a permit to drive outside Mexico City. For example, Sixt charges an Exit Permit of approximately MXN 1,890.00 if the vehicle will be returned at another location. This permit does not apply if the return is at a branch within the airport. It is recommended to check this fee directly with the agency before finalizing the reservation to avoid surprise charges.
