Covid-19: Regulations for travel to New Zealand

International travel to New Zealand is only allowed for "essential reasons". This does not apply to nationals and residents.

Exceptional travel

There are exemptions to the closure of the border for essential reasons, which include trips for couples or relatives, critical workers and students. Tourist trips are not allowed. Those who qualify to travel for essential reasons should submit an application at https://www.immigration.govt.nz/formshelp/request-for-travel-to-new-zealand . high risk countries. The list of countries and more information can be found at https://www.immigration.govt.nz/about-us/covid-19/border-closures-and-exceptions/restrictions-on-travel-from-very-high -countries-of-risk

Mandatory vaccination

Travelers must present a valid international certificate for complete vaccination against COVID-19, with the use of an approved vaccine. The final dose must have been administered at least 14 days before the trip. Vaccination requirements do not apply to New Zealand citizens. The list of accepted vaccines can be found at https://covid19.govt.nz/travel/international-travel-and-transit/proof-of-vaccination-for-travel-to-new-zealand/

Quarantine is in effect upon arrival

A COVID-19 test will be administered on arrival and requires a 7-day administered isolation in a government facility, followed by a period of self-isolation in a residence or private accommodation. A second test will be administered on the 9th day after arrival and travelers must self-isolate until a negative result is confirmed. Travelers must register with the 'Managed Seclusion Assignment System' as the first step in securing their place in Managed Seclusion. Travel is not allowed without this confirmed reservation. More details on isolation procedures can be found at https://www.miq.govt.nz/travel-to-new-zealand/secure-your-place-in-managed-isolation/

It is mandatory to submit medical certificate / proof

Upon departure, proof of a nucleic acid amplification test (NAAT) or negative antigen test, taken within the previous 72 hours, must be presented. Accepted nucleic acid amplification tests (NAATs) include PCR, RT-PCR, TMA, and LAMP tests. This is mandatory for most travelers. Exceptions to the tests can be found at https://covid19.govt.nz/travel/pre-departure-tests-to-enter-new-zealand/#find-out-if-you-need-a-pre- departure- test-to-enter-new-zealand
