International travel to New Zealand is only allowed for "essential reasons". This does not apply to nationals and residents.
There are exemptions to the closure of the border for essential reasons, which include trips for couples or relatives, critical workers and students. Tourist trips are not allowed. Travelers must present a valid international certificate for complete vaccination against COVID-19, with the use of an approved vaccine. The final dose must have been administered at least 14 days before the trip. Vaccination requirements do not apply to New Zealand citizens. A COVID-19 test will be administered on arrival and requires a 7-day administered isolation in a government facility, followed by a period of self-isolation in a residence or private accommodation. A second test will be administered on the 9th day after arrival and travelers must self-isolate until a negative result is confirmed. Travelers must register with the 'Managed Seclusion Assignment System' as the first step in securing their place in Managed Seclusion. Travel is not allowed without this confirmed reservation. Upon departure, proof of a nucleic acid amplification test (NAAT) or negative antigen test, taken within the previous 72 hours, must be presented. Accepted nucleic acid amplification tests (NAATs) include PCR, RT-PCR, TMA, and LAMP tests. This is mandatory for most travelers.
