Istanbul Airport has a modern and diverse transport infrastructure that connects the terminal with the main points of the city and other nearby provinces.

Metro

The M11 line (Gayrettepe - Istanbul Airport - Arnavutköy) provides a fast connection between the airport and the city centre. The journey to Kagithane station takes approximately 27 minutes, allowing transfers to other key lines such as the M7 and M2 (at Gayrettepe). Payment can be made with an Estambulkart or credit card.

  • Operating hours: Runs between 6:00 am and 12:00 am.
  • Frequency: Trains run every 20 minutes.

Buses and Shuttles

Havaist: This is a premium private transport service offering direct routes to the main tourist and transport hubs of Istanbul. The buses are equipped with screens, Wi-Fi and USB ports. Payment can be made with a credit/debit card or Estambulkart.

  • HVIST-5: Esenler Bus Station.
  • HVIST-9: Avcilar - Bahçesehir.
  • HVIST-10: Bakirköy.
  • HVIST-12: Aksaray - Beyazit Square (Old City).
  • HVIST-13: Sabiha Gökçen Airport.
  • HVIST-14: Kadiköy.
  • HVIST-15: Besiktas.
  • HVIST-16: Taksim Square.

IETT: The municipal public bus service offers more affordable options, mainly aimed at residents and outlying areas.

  • H-1: Mahmutbey Metro.
  • H-2: Mecidiyeköy.
  • H-3: Halkali Marmaray.
  • H-6: Yunus Emre District.
  • H-8: Haciosman / Sariyer.

Intercity Transport

For journeys to other cities outside Istanbul, there are direct operators from the airport:

  • Istanbul Seyahat: Connects to the Thrace region, including cities such as Edirne, Tekirdag and Çorlu.
  • BBBus: Offers direct transfers to the city of Bursa.

Taxis

Taxi services are available 24 hours a day and are organised by colour according to vehicle type and fare:

  • Class C (Orange): Standard economy vehicles.
  • Class D (Turquoise): Mid-range vehicles with greater comfort.
  • Class E (Black): Luxury vehicles with premium fares.

Taxi ranks are located in front of the Arrivals exits (Plaza) and at the Departures level. The journey to Sultanahmet or Taksim can take between 60 and 90 minutes, depending on traffic.

Transportation Tips to/from the airport

Some of these tips may seem obvious, but they are worth keeping in mind when traveling to or from the airport, especially if you are using public transportation.
 
 1 - To the airport: leave a little earlier than usually recommended. If you take a taxi or a private car service, allow for rush hour traffic, demonstrations, strikes or events that could delay your trip. It always helps to check the local news before you leave.
 
If you book a shared shuttle, keep the company's contact number handy in case the pickup is late. These services usually confirm a scheduled pickup time in advance.
 
If you use public transportation (bus or train), check the schedules (weekends and holidays usually have less frequent service), whether you need to transfer, and how to pay the fare (a transit card, or cash to the driver). These details seem obvious, but knowing them ahead of time can save you from a delay that could cause problems.
 
If you drive a rental car to the airport, check where to return it. Many airports have a dedicated rental car return area.
 
 2 - From the airport: this part is less stressful, since there is no risk of missing a flight. At worst, you will reach your hotel or meeting point a little later than planned.
 
Once you leave the plane, collect your baggage and complete any required arrival procedures. Then follow the signs for ground transportation or ask airport staff.
 
Check bus and train schedules in advance if you arrive late at night, since not all services run 24 hours. The same applies to taxis. If you plan to use a ride-hailing app such as Uber, have it ready on your phone to contact the driver.
 
If you booked a private transfer, a driver will usually be waiting for you with a sign. If you are renting a car, booking in advance gives you more peace of mind. Rental counters are usually located in the arrivals hall.
