Overnight layover guide. Sleeping facilities in the public zone or boarding area

Please note that some published services and schedules may be subject to change. If the idea is to spend the night in the public area, consider a plan B in case the stay inside the airport is only allowed for those who are about to board.

Dulles International Airport (IAD) remains open 24 hours a day, allowing passengers with overnight connections or very early morning departures to stay inside the terminal. However, the environment can be noisy and bright, as cleaning and maintenance operations continue throughout the night.

Where to Sleep

Public Areas (Pre-security): The ticketing area (upper level) is usually quieter than baggage claim, although seating is limited and most chairs have metal armrests. Some sections have carpeted floors, but passenger traffic only decreases significantly after midnight.

Airside (Post-security): If you have already checked in or are in transit, options improve slightly.
Concourses A and B: More modern and bright, but seating typically has armrests.
Concourses C and D: Older facilities but often offer quieter corners and benches where stretching out is easier.
Recommendation: Bring earplugs and a sleep mask, as announcements and lighting are constant. A sweater or blanket is also advisable, as air conditioning can be strong.

Luggage

The airport does not offer luggage storage (lockers) or left-luggage services inside the terminal for security reasons. This means you must keep your bags with you at all times until your airline’s check-in counters open.

Food & Drinks

Unlike in the past, there are currently no 24-hour restaurants or shops. Dining outlets, including “Dulles Gourmet Market,” generally close between 10:00 pm and 11:00 pm.
Solution: During the late-night hours, your only options are vending machines offering drinks and snacks throughout the terminal and concourses. Bringing your own provisions is recommended if you plan to spend the night.

Wi-Fi & Charging

Internet access is free and unlimited. You will find plenty of charging stations and outlets, especially in Concourses A and B and in renovated gate areas of Concourses C and D.

Showers

There are no public showers. They are only available inside certain lounges (such as British Airways, Etihad/Chase, Virgin Atlantic, and United Polaris), which are closed overnight and require membership or premium-class tickets to enter.
