Car Hire at Brisbane airport (BNE)
List of car rental agencies that operate within the Brisbane airport (BNE)
Subject to change: schedules, listed companies and contact details may change due to commercial decisions or operational updates, so it is always advisable to check availability on the official website of the car rental company before booking.
For added convenience, Brisbane Airport features counters for the main car hire companies in both terminals. In the Domestic Terminal, service desks are located on Level 1 (arrivals area), at both ends of the building (Qantas and Virgin Australia areas). In the International Terminal, counters are located on Level 2, after passing through security control.
If you are looking for the best rates and availability, we recommend comparing prices and booking in advance here.
Companies with on-site counters
Additionally, other companies operate off-site and offer complimentary shuttle services to their nearby offices.
Car hire requirements
Before renting a car, please note the following:
- Driving licence: You must present a valid and current licence. If your licence is not in English, you are required to provide an International Driving Permit (IDP) together with your original licence.
- Minimum age: The general minimum age for rental is 21. Drivers under 25 are usually subject to a daily “young driver” surcharge and may have restricted access to certain luxury or large vehicle categories.
- Credit card: A credit card in the name of the main driver is required for the security deposit (bond). Debit cards are not always accepted for this purpose, so it is advisable to check with the selected company.
- Passport: For international travellers, a passport is commonly required as additional identification.
- Driving rules: In Australia, driving is on the left-hand side of the road.
- Child seats: Mandatory for children under 7 years old. Check the latest regulations on the Queensland Department of Transport website.
- Seat belts: Mandatory for all occupants.
- Tolls: Most motorways connecting to the city, Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast are tolled. Car hire companies usually provide electronic devices (tags); check the process and associated charges when signing the contract.

5 tips for renting a car abroad
- Make sure your driver's license is valid in the destination country. Some countries also require an International Driving Permit (IDP). Keep in mind that the IDP is not valid on its own: it must always be carried together with your national driver's license.
- Check the documents and insurance required by local traffic laws, and what coverage is included in your rental (collision damage waiver, third-party liability, deductible).
- Learn the traffic rules of the destination country: speed limits on highways and city streets, right of way at intersections without traffic lights, blood alcohol limits, tolls, etc.
- Check which side of the road traffic drives on, and whether the steering wheel is on the same side as in your home country.
- Know what to do if you are involved in a traffic accident: who to call, what to document and how to report it to the rental company.
