Requirements for Renting a Vehicle

To pick up a rental car in Honduras, rental companies generally require the following physical, valid documentation:

• Minimum age: The minimum required age is 21 (at certain agencies, such as Avis, the general standard starts at 25). Drivers between 21 and 24 are usually subject to an additional daily young driver fee and restrictions on certain vehicle categories (such as luxury SUVs or large pickup trucks).
• Driver's license: An original, valid physical driver's license with at least one or two years of driving experience. If your driver's license is not written in the Latin alphabet or Spanish, you must also present an International Driving Permit (IDP).
• ID or passport: A valid original passport for foreign visitors or a National Identification Document (DNI) for Honduran citizens.
• Credit card for security deposit: You must present a physical credit card issued by a bank in the name of the reservation holder. A temporary hold will be placed on the card as a security deposit (usually ranging from USD 1,000 to USD 2,500 depending on the vehicle category and coverage selected). Debit cards, virtual cards, and cash are generally not accepted for the security deposit.
• Insurance policies and coverage: Purchase of mandatory third-party liability coverage in accordance with local traffic regulations. It is advisable to add Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and Theft Protection (TP) to limit your liability in the event of an accident or theft.
