Ramón Villeda Morales International Airport (SAP), also known as La Mesa International Airport and opened in February 1965, is the busiest airport in Honduras and serves San Pedro Sula and the northern region of the country. It offers regular nonstop flights to major international hubs in the United States (Miami, Houston, Atlanta, Fort Lauderdale), Central America (San Salvador, Panama City, Guatemala City), Mexico, and Spain (Madrid), as well as connections to the country's main tourist and urban destinations, such as Roatán, La Ceiba, and Tegucigalpa/Palmerola.

Terminals

The airport operates through a single passenger terminal building that remains open 24 hours a day, with separate internal areas for independently managing domestic and international operations for both arrivals and departures. Following an expansion project inaugurated in September 2025, the terminal now includes two new modules, A and B, increasing the airport's operational and commercial capacity. The facility has increased its number of boarding bridges from 3 to 7 and its commercial offering to 40 retail outlets.

The airport has a large outdoor parking lot in front of the terminal building, with areas for short- and long-term parking. The facility has 379 concrete spaces in the general parking area, plus 110 spaces for employees and 14 for diplomatic use. Ambulances, fire trucks, and police and military vehicles can park free of charge.

The first 15 minutes are free. After 5 days of parking, a 10% discount is applied to the total amount due, automatically at checkout.

The airport also offers Compass, an automated parking payment system that allows access and payment using affiliated credit or debit cards, eliminating the need for cash and paper tickets.

Facilities for passengers with special needs

Ramón Villeda Morales International Airport provides services and facilities adapted to facilitate the transit of passengers with reduced mobility, older adults, pregnant women, and unaccompanied minors. Most of these services are coordinated jointly by the airport administration and the airlines.

Assistance and Wheelchairs

If you require assistance getting around or the use of a wheelchair inside the terminal, you should notify your airline or travel agency at least 48 hours in advance of the scheduled departure of your flight. The airline's ground assistance staff will meet you and provide assistance during check-in at the counter, security screening, and immigration procedures, and will facilitate boarding through jet bridges or with adapted equipment.

Terminal Infrastructure and Accessibility

The airport facilities have been adapted to ensure accessible and independent movement:

• Ramps and wide corridors: Access routes without steep level changes between the exterior curbside area, the main lobby, and the waiting areas.
• Elevators: Connections between the different levels of the terminal, providing access to the boarding areas and arrivals zones.
• Accessible restrooms: Public restrooms equipped with grab bars and dimensions suitable for wheelchair users.
• Accessible parking: Reserved and clearly marked spaces for vehicles transporting people with disabilities or reduced mobility, located near the terminal entrances.

Unaccompanied Minors

Airlines operating in San Pedro Sula offer unaccompanied minor programs for children and young travelers flying alone (generally between 5 and 14 years of age, and optionally up to 17). In addition to arranging the service with the airline before the trip, it is essential to obtain in advance the legal authorization for minors to leave the country required by Honduras' National Institute of Migration (INM), duly notarized.

Service Animals

Properly certified guide dogs and medical assistance dogs are authorized to enter the terminal and travel in the cabin with their handler at no additional charge. You must present the airline with the dog's harness and valid veterinary documentation, as well as obtain the applicable animal health authorizations from Honduras' agricultural and livestock health authorities (SENASA).
