Car rental agency counters are located in the arrivals hall of the International Terminal, immediately after customs clearance and the baggage claim area. Vehicle pickup and return take place in the dedicated rental parking area adjacent to the terminal building:

Requirements for Renting a Vehicle

To rent and pick up a vehicle at Cibao Airport, agencies generally require the following documents and conditions:

  • Minimum age: The base age requirement is generally 21 (some companies require a minimum age of 25 depending on car category). Drivers aged 18 to 24 are usually subject to a young driver surcharge.
  • Driver's license: A valid physical driver's license from the country of origin held for at least 1 to 2 years. An International Driving Permit (IDP) is recommended if the original license is not printed in Latin characters or Spanish.
  • Official identification: A valid passport (or national ID card for Dominican citizens).
  • Credit card: An international credit card in the primary driver's name to hold the security deposit. Debit cards and cash are generally not accepted for security holds.
  • Mandatory insurance: Purchase of standard third-party liability coverage as required by local traffic regulations.

Tips for renting a car in Dominican Republic

  1. Check that your driver's license is valid in Dominican Republic. Some countries also ask for an International Driving Permit (IDP), which is only valid together with your national license.
  2. Review what the rental includes: collision damage waiver, third-party liability and the deductible. Most companies also hold a deposit on a credit card in the driver's name.
  3. Learn the local rules before you drive: speed limits, right of way, alcohol limits and tolls.
  4. Check which side of the road traffic drives on and where the steering wheel is.
  5. At pickup, photograph the car (inside and out) and the fuel level, and keep the photos until the deposit is returned.
