Connecting at Shanghai Pudong airport

Connection time calculator, immigration and security, and how to move between terminals at PVG.

How connections work at PVG

At Shanghai Pudong airport, passengers connecting between two international flights can usually stay in the transit area without going through immigration. If you connect from an international to a domestic flight, you enter the country here: you go through immigration and collect and re-check your bags.

The airport has 4 terminals or concourses (Terminal 1, Terminal 2, Satellite 1, Satellite 2).

Connecting passengers go through a transfer security screening.

Connection time calculator

Is your layover at PVG long enough? Pick your connection and get an estimate with the times of this airport.

Terminals / concourses: Terminal 1, Terminal 2, Satellite 1, Satellite 2

Getting between them: Airside Automated People Mover (APM) connects T1 to S1 and T2 to S2. Landside transfer between T1 and T2 is via a covered walkway or free airport shuttle bus.

Terminal 1 connects airside to Satellite 1 (S1) and Terminal 2 connects airside to Satellite 2 (S2) via the APM. Terminals 1 and 2 are not connected airside.

Domestic-international connections require border control. Eligible 24-hour direct international-to-international transit passengers stay airside via a document check.

  • Check if your gate is in Satellite S1 or S2; board the underground APM people mover after check-in or upon arrival.
  • Terminals 1 and 2 are not connected airside; transferring between them requires clearing exit/security and using the landside walkway or shuttle bus.
  • Baggage through-check on international-to-domestic routes is limited to specific airlines; confirm at origin whether you must collect bags at PVG.

Estimate based on typical times at this airport, not your airline's official minimum connection time. Immigration and security lines change with the time of day and season. On a single ticket, the airline must rebook you if you miss the connection; on separate tickets, it does not.
