Requirements for hiring a vehicle

Driving in Japan requires strict compliance with local regulations. In order to hire a car at the airport, you will need to present the following documents:

  • International Driving Permit (IDP): It is essential to present a permit issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention. Japan does not recognise permits based on the 1926 or 1968 conventions.
  • National driving licence: It must be valid and issued in your country of residence.
  • Official Japanese translation: Citizens holding driving licences issued in Belgium, France, Germany, Monaco, Switzerland or Taiwan do not require the 1949 IDP, but must present their original licence together with an official Japanese translation issued by the JAF (Japan Automobile Federation) or by the relevant consular authorities.
  • Passport: Original and valid identity document.
  • Credit card: Used for the security deposit and payment of the service.

Companies, opening hours and desk locations can change. Check with the rental company before booking.

Tips for renting a car in Japan

  1. Check that your driver's license is valid in Japan. Some countries also ask for an International Driving Permit (IDP), which is only valid together with your national license.
  2. Review what the rental includes: collision damage waiver, third-party liability and the deductible. Most companies also hold a deposit on a credit card in the driver's name.
  3. Learn the local rules before you drive: speed limits, right of way, alcohol limits and tolls.
  4. In Japan traffic drives on the left: the steering wheel is on the right and roundabouts go clockwise.
  5. At pickup, photograph the car (inside and out) and the fuel level, and keep the photos until the deposit is returned.
  6. Know what to do in an accident: who to call, what to document and how to report it to the rental company.

Find the rental desks and parking on the NRT airport map.
