The Car Rental Centre at Leeds Airport is located on Whitehouse Lane. To get there, you can use the free shuttle bus service operating 24 hours a day, departing from the stop located opposite the terminal (journey time 4–5 minutes). If you prefer to walk, the journey takes approximately 15 minutes via the Mid Stay car park.

Note: Both companies provide key drop boxes for out-of-hours returns (24 hours).

Requirements for renting a vehicle

To rent a car in the United Kingdom, you will generally need to meet the following requirements:

  • Driving licence: You must present a valid and full licence (original, not digital). If your licence is not in the Latin alphabet, an International Driving Permit (IDP) is required.
  • Minimum age: Most agencies require drivers to be at least 25 years old. Some providers allow drivers aged 21 to 24 subject to an additional “young driver” surcharge.
  • Identification: Valid passport or official identity document (mandatory for non-UK residents).
  • Credit card: A credit card in the name of the main driver is required for the security deposit. Some agencies accept debit cards under specific conditions, but it is recommended to check in advance.
  • Proof of travel: International visitors may be required to show return flight tickets or accommodation confirmation.

5 tips for renting a car abroad

What to consider:

  1. Make sure your driver's license is valid in the destination country. Some countries also require an International Driving Permit (IDP). Keep in mind that the IDP is not valid on its own: it must always be carried together with your national driver's license.
  2. Check the documents and insurance required by local traffic laws, and what coverage is included in your rental (collision damage waiver, third-party liability, deductible).
  3. Learn the traffic rules of the destination country: speed limits on highways and city streets, right of way at intersections without traffic lights, blood alcohol limits, tolls, etc.
  4. Check which side of the road traffic drives on, and whether the steering wheel is on the same side as in your home country.
  5. Know what to do if you are involved in a traffic accident: who to call, what to document and how to report it to the rental company.
