Requirements for Hiring a Vehicle

Driving in Japan requires compliance with strict documentation regulations. Make sure you have the following before your arrival:

  • International Driving Permit: Visitors are required to present an International Driving Permit (IDP) issued in accordance with the terms of the 1949 Geneva Convention. Japan does not recognise permits issued under other conventions (such as the Vienna Convention).
  • Passport: You will need to present your original passport when completing the rental agreement.
  • Official translations: If you hold a driving licence from Germany, France, Switzerland, Belgium, Monaco or Taiwan, you do not need an IDP, but you must present your original licence together with an official Japanese translation issued by the JAF (Japan Automobile Federation) or the relevant embassy.
  • Minimum age: Generally 18 years, although some agencies may require drivers to be over 21 or 25 years old for certain vehicle categories.

Companies, opening hours and desk locations can change. Check with the rental company before booking.

Tips for renting a car in Japan

  1. Check that your driver's license is valid in Japan. Some countries also ask for an International Driving Permit (IDP), which is only valid together with your national license.
  2. Review what the rental includes: collision damage waiver, third-party liability and the deductible. Most companies also hold a deposit on a credit card in the driver's name.
  3. Learn the local rules before you drive: speed limits, right of way, alcohol limits and tolls.
  4. In Japan traffic drives on the left: the steering wheel is on the right and roundabouts go clockwise.
  5. At pickup, photograph the car (inside and out) and the fuel level, and keep the photos until the deposit is returned.
  6. Know what to do in an accident: who to call, what to document and how to report it to the rental company.

Find the rental desks and parking on the HND airport map.
