Car Rental Requirements
To rent a vehicle in Brazil, drivers must meet standard requirements established by local rental providers:
- Minimum age: The primary driver must be at least 21 years old. Drivers aged 18 to 20 may rent with selected companies upon payment of an additional young driver surcharge.
- Driver's license: A valid physical original driver's license. Foreign tourists may use their home country license (if printed in the Latin alphabet) alongside their passport containing the official Brazilian entry stamp. An International Driving Permit (IDP) is required if the original license is not in the Latin alphabet.
- Credit card: A physical credit card in the primary renter's name is mandatory for the security deposit hold. Debit cards, prepaid cards, and cash are not accepted for security deposits.
- License tenure: Most agencies require drivers to have held their valid license for at least 1 to 2 years.
Advance reservations are recommended when visiting during Carnival, the year-end holidays, or the July vacation period to ensure availability and favorable rates.

5 tips for renting a car abroad
- Make sure your driver's license is valid in the destination country. Some countries also require an International Driving Permit (IDP). Keep in mind that the IDP is not valid on its own: it must always be carried together with your national driver's license.
- Check the documents and insurance required by local traffic laws, and what coverage is included in your rental (collision damage waiver, third-party liability, deductible).
- Learn the traffic rules of the destination country: speed limits on highways and city streets, right of way at intersections without traffic lights, blood alcohol limits, tolls, etc.
- Check which side of the road traffic drives on, and whether the steering wheel is on the same side as in your home country.
- Know what to do if you are involved in a traffic accident: who to call, what to document and how to report it to the rental company.
