Due to the island's geography and tourism-focused economy, the availability of conventional rental cars at the airport is more limited than at most airports on the Colombian mainland. However, rental offices and service providers located both in the public arrivals hall and nearby offer cars, SUVs, and, most notably, the popular golf carts (locally known as mulitas) and buggies, which are the preferred way to get around San Andrés.
Vehicle Rental Requirements
To rent a car or recreational vehicle in San Andrés, the following requirements generally apply:
- Minimum age: At least 21 years old (some rental agencies may require drivers to be at least 25 or charge a young driver surcharge).
- Driver's license: A valid original driver's license is required. Foreign visitors may use a valid license issued by their home country if traveling as tourists, although an International Driving Permit is recommended if the license is not in Spanish.
- Identification: A valid passport or national identification document.
- Credit card: A credit card in the primary renter's name is required for the security deposit (pre-authorization hold). The amount depends on the type of vehicle and the rental period.
- Insurance: Most rental agreements include basic collision and theft protection, but it is advisable to verify the coverage and consider purchasing additional insurance to reduce the deductible.
Note: For golf carts and buggies, requirements may be less strict at some informal rental businesses. However, established rental agencies generally apply the same documentation and safety requirements as they do for conventional vehicles.
