Rental companies at the airport

Car rental companies operating at San Juan airport (SJU) and where to find them. The airport is 5 km from San Juan. See also the airport guide for general information.

The car rental center is located on the first level of the multilevel parking garage and is within walking distance of the passenger terminals. A variety of local and international companies offer a wide range of vehicles for exploring the island.

Vehicle Rental Requirements

To rent a car at the airport, you will generally need to meet the following requirements:

  • Driver's license: It must be valid and current. Foreign drivers can generally use a driver's license from their home country if it is written in Roman characters; otherwise, an International Driving Permit is recommended.
  • Minimum age: Most rental agencies require drivers to be at least 21 years old. Keep in mind that drivers under the age of 25 are usually subject to an additional daily "young driver" fee.
  • Credit card: A credit card in the primary driver's name is required to place the security deposit hold. Some local companies may accept debit cards under specific conditions and with higher deposits.
  • Passport: International travelers will be required to present their passport along with the documentation necessary to enter the country.

Companies, opening hours and desk locations can change. Check with the rental company before booking.

Tips for renting a car in Puerto Rico

  1. Check that your driver's license is valid in Puerto Rico. Some countries also ask for an International Driving Permit (IDP), which is only valid together with your national license.
  2. Review what the rental includes: collision damage waiver, third-party liability and the deductible. Most companies also hold a deposit on a credit card in the driver's name.
  3. Learn the local rules before you drive: speed limits, right of way, alcohol limits and tolls.
  4. Check which side of the road traffic drives on and where the steering wheel is.
  5. At pickup, photograph the car (inside and out) and the fuel level, and keep the photos until the deposit is returned.
  6. Know what to do in an accident: who to call, what to document and how to report it to the rental company.
