Car Rental Requirements
When picking up a vehicle at the airport desks, car rental companies generally require the following documents and conditions:
- Minimum age: The standard minimum rental age is 21 years. Drivers aged 21 to 24 may incur an additional young driver daily fee and may face restrictions on luxury or large SUV categories. Standard rates apply from age 25.
- Driver's license: A valid physical driver's license from the country of residence, held for at least one or two years. An International Driving Permit (IDP) is required if the license is not in Latin script.
- Identification: A valid passport showing the entry stamp into Honduras (for international visitors) or a National Identity Document (DNI for Honduran citizens).
- Credit card for security deposit: A physical credit card in the primary driver's name is required with sufficient available balance for the security hold (typically between USD 1,000 and 2,000 depending on the vehicle and insurance coverage). Debit cards and cash are generally not accepted for security deposits.
- Insurance: Mandatory third-party liability insurance (TPL/ALI) along with collision damage and theft protection (CDW/LDW), either included with online reservations or purchased directly at the counter.
