Due to the current Covid-19 pandemic, all regular services and hours may be subject to change. Thus, if the idea is to spend the night in the public area, consider a plan B in case the stay inside the airport is only allowed for those who are close to boarding.
Spending the night at JFK Airport
New York JFK airport operates with many flights and connections not only inside the United States, but also in the rest of the world. Therefore, movement is constant, even during the night and early in the morning. That is why it is common to see many passengers walking through the enclosure and waiting for their flight departure. Although all terminals remain open 24 hours a day, the airport does not have many comfortable places where you can rest, and it is also pretty cold, noisy and bright. It is recommended to have a sleeping bag, blankets, an eye mask and earplugs.
Where to rest?
As previously mentioned, there are not many resting spots in the public areas and most seats have armrests, which makes it difficult to rest. Terminals 1 and 4 may be the most comfortable, since at least there are eateries open throughout the night. Terminal 5 is the most modern and clean and can also be an option if you do not care about sleeping on the floor. Another option (by paying or through a credit card offering the service) is to use one of the VIP lounges, where you can access more amenities and privacy. The only problem is that most of them close at night. The
Wingtips Lounge, in the boarding area of Terminal 4, is the only one that stays open 24 hours a day. In case you decide to sleep in a hotel, the
TWA Lounge is right next to the Terminal 5. In addition, there are several in the vicinity, and some of them operate shuttle services. At the end of this webpage, there are a few accommodation alternatives.
