Requirements to hire a vehicle

To hire a car in Portugal, you will generally need to meet the following minimum requirements:

• Driving licence: Must be valid and held for at least one year. If your licence was issued outside the European Union, it is recommended (and in some cases mandatory) to present an International Driving Permit.
• Identity document: A valid passport or national ID card.
• Minimum age: Most companies require drivers to be at least 21 years old. Please note that drivers under the age of 25 are usually subject to a “young driver surcharge”.
• Credit card: A physical credit card in the name of the main driver is required to place the security deposit hold. Many agencies do not accept debit cards for this purpose.
