Connecting at Newark New Jersey airport

Connection time calculator, immigration and security, and how to move between terminals at EWR.

How connections work at EWR

At Newark New Jersey airport, as at every airport in the United States, passengers arriving on an international flight must clear immigration (CBP) and customs, collect their checked bags and re-check them, and go through TSA security again before their connecting flight, even when both flights are on the same ticket.

The airport has 3 terminals or concourses (Terminal A, Terminal B, Terminal C).

Connecting passengers go through a transfer security screening.

Terminals / concourses: Terminal A, Terminal B, Terminal C

Getting between them: Airside shuttle bus (between Terminal A, Terminal C, and Terminal B drop-off) and landside AirTrain monorail connecting all terminals (Terminal A requires a free connector shuttle or 15-minute covered walk from its AirTrain station).

United Airlines operates an airside shuttle bus between Terminal A (gate A28) and Terminal C (gate C71), with drop-off only at Terminal B (gate B67). All other transfers between terminals require exiting security.

No internal or exit passport control exists; all arriving international passengers clear U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) inspection upon arrival.

  • United flyers transferring between Terminals A and C can use the free post-security shuttle bus (near gates A28 and C71) to avoid re-clearing TSA security.
  • AirTrain doesn't stop directly at Terminal A; allow an extra 15-minute walk or take the free airport connector shuttle from the Terminal A AirTrain station.
  • International arriving passengers must collect checked bags, pass CBP customs, re-check bags at the transfer desk, and clear TSA security before connecting.

Estimate based on typical times at this airport, not your airline's official minimum connection time. Immigration and security lines change with the time of day and season. On a single ticket, the airline must rebook you if you miss the connection; on separate tickets, it does not.

Times are estimates: always check with your airline.
