Connecting at Washington National airport

Connection time calculator, immigration and security, and how to move between terminals at DCA.

How connections work at DCA

At Washington Reagan National airport, as at every airport in the United States, passengers arriving on an international flight must clear immigration (CBP) and customs, collect their checked bags and re-check them, and go through TSA security again before their connecting flight, even when both flights are on the same ticket.

The airport has 2 terminals or concourses (Terminal 1, Terminal 2 (Concourses B to E)).

Connecting passengers go through a transfer security screening.

Terminals / concourses: Terminal 1, Terminal 2 (Concourses B to E)

Getting between them: Walking inside Terminal 2; between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 about 10 to 12 minutes on foot indoors, or the shuttle that loops roughly every 15 minutes

Terminal 2 concourses B, C, D and E are connected airside by National Hall: you can walk the whole gate range without clearing security again. Terminal 1 (gates 1 to 9) is a separate building with its own checkpoint.

Official transfer times:

  • Terminal 1 → Terminal 2 (landside, on foot): up to 12 min walking
  • Terminal 2 end → Terminal 2 other end: up to 15 min walking

There is no internal airside passport control. Arriving international passengers clear U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) on arrival.

  • Connections within Terminal 2 need no rescreening; the longest walk end to end along National Hall is about 15 minutes.
  • Changing between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 means clearing security again: allow at least 90 minutes, more on Monday mornings and Thursday or Friday afternoons.

Estimate based on typical times at this airport, not your airline's official minimum connection time. Immigration and security lines change with the time of day and season. On a single ticket, the airline must rebook you if you miss the connection; on separate tickets, it does not.
