Subject to change: schedules, listed companies and contact details may change due to commercial decisions or operational updates, so it is always advisable to check availability on the official website of the car rental company before booking.

Bristol Airport centralises its vehicle hire services at the Car Rental Centre, a dedicated facility located outside the terminal area. To reach it, the airport provides a free courtesy shuttle bus which departs from bus stop 1, located opposite the arrivals terminal. Transfers run every 15 minutes between 6:00 am and 12:00 am, and on demand outside these hours.

Requirements to hire a vehicle

To hire a car at Bristol Airport, you will generally need to meet the following requirements:

  • Driving Licence: Must be valid and held for at least 1 or 2 years (varies by company). If your licence is not in English, you may need an International Driving Permit.
  • DVLA Check Code: UK residents must generate a DVLA check code so the agency can review their driving record.
  • Identification: Valid passport or national identity document.
  • Credit Card: A credit card in the main driver’s name is required to provide the security deposit (funds hold).
  • Minimum Age: Usually 21 years. Note that drivers under 25 often have to pay an additional “young driver” fee and may face restrictions on the types of vehicles available.

5 tips for renting a car abroad

What to consider:

  1. Make sure your driver's license is valid in the destination country. Some countries also require an International Driving Permit (IDP). Keep in mind that the IDP is not valid on its own: it must always be carried together with your national driver's license.
  2. Check the documents and insurance required by local traffic laws, and what coverage is included in your rental (collision damage waiver, third-party liability, deductible).
  3. Learn the traffic rules of the destination country: speed limits on highways and city streets, right of way at intersections without traffic lights, blood alcohol limits, tolls, etc.
  4. Check which side of the road traffic drives on, and whether the steering wheel is on the same side as in your home country.
  5. Know what to do if you are involved in a traffic accident: who to call, what to document and how to report it to the rental company.
