Connecting at Austin airport

Connection time calculator, immigration and security, and how to move between terminals at AUS.

How connections work at AUS

At Austin airport, as at every airport in the United States, passengers arriving on an international flight must clear immigration (CBP) and customs, collect their checked bags and re-check them, and go through TSA security again before their connecting flight, even when both flights are on the same ticket.

Getting between them: Walking (about 8 to 10 minutes end to end); no trains, buses or terminal changes

Since the South Terminal closed on 31 March 2026, all flights use the Barbara Jordan Terminal: all 34 gates are on one concourse behind one security zone.

There is no internal airside passport control. Arriving international passengers clear U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) on arrival.

  • Any gate pair can be reached in 8 to 10 minutes: 45 to 60 minutes is usually enough for a domestic connection if your first flight is on time.
  • Security lines can exceed 40 minutes from 5 to 8 a.m. and in the late afternoon if you have to re-clear security.

Estimate based on typical times at this airport, not your airline's official minimum connection time. Immigration and security lines change with the time of day and season. On a single ticket, the airline must rebook you if you miss the connection; on separate tickets, it does not.
