Requirements to Rent a Vehicle

To rent a car in Italy, you must meet the following standard requirements:

  • Minimum age: Generally 21 years old. Drivers under the age of 25 are usually subject to an additional “young driver” surcharge.
  • Driving licence: It must be valid and held for at least one year. If you reside outside the European Union, you are required to present an International Driving Permit together with your national licence.
  • Credit card: A credit card (usually Visa or Mastercard) in the name of the main driver is required to provide the security deposit. Most agencies do not accept debit cards for this purpose.
  • Identification: A valid passport or national identity card (for EU citizens).

5 tips for renting a car abroad

What to consider:

  1. Make sure your driver's license is valid in the destination country. Some countries also require an International Driving Permit (IDP). Keep in mind that the IDP is not valid on its own: it must always be carried together with your national driver's license.
  2. Check the documents and insurance required by local traffic laws, and what coverage is included in your rental (collision damage waiver, third-party liability, deductible).
  3. Learn the traffic rules of the destination country: speed limits on highways and city streets, right of way at intersections without traffic lights, blood alcohol limits, tolls, etc.
  4. Check which side of the road traffic drives on, and whether the steering wheel is on the same side as in your home country.
  5. Know what to do if you are involved in a traffic accident: who to call, what to document and how to report it to the rental company.
