Requirements for Renting a Vehicle

To pick up a vehicle at Punta Cana Airport, car rental companies require customers to meet the following conditions and provide the following documents:

• Minimum age: The usual minimum age requirement is 21 or 25, depending on each rental company's individual policy. Drivers between the ages of 21 and 24 are generally subject to a daily young-driver surcharge.
• Driver's license: A physical, valid, and current driver's license issued in the country of origin, typically held for a minimum of one to two years. If the license is not written in the Latin alphabet, it must be accompanied by an International Driving Permit (IDP).
• Passport: An original, valid passport demonstrating legal entry into the Dominican Republic.
• Credit card: An international credit card in the reservation holder's name, with sufficient available credit to place a temporary hold for the security deposit (deductible). As a general rule, rental agencies do not accept cash or debit cards for the security deposit.
• Mandatory insurance: Basic third-party liability coverage and collision and theft protection (CDW/LDW), purchased at the rental counter or obtained through verified external insurance coverage.
