Overnight stay at the airport

Can you spend the night at Montego Bay airport (MBJ)? Opening hours, rest areas and services for long layovers. See also the airport guide for general information.

Nighttime schedule and terminal closure

Sir Donald Sangster International Airport is not open 24 hours a day to the general public. The passenger terminal closes each night following the arrival or departure of the last scheduled flight (typically between 10:00 pm and 11:00 pm) and reopens at 5:00 am or 6:00 am. A flight curfew and airspace restriction is enforced between 00:00 and 06:00 hours, during which routine maintenance and cleaning are conducted.

Sleeping overnight and overnight amenities

Airport security does not permit passengers to spend the night sleeping in the boarding lounges or public terminal concourses. The terminal has no sleeping pods, quiet rest zones, or public left-luggage lockers. Furthermore, Club Mobay lounges close at 8:00 pm (Arrivals) and 10:00 pm (Departures), and no retail shops, duty-free outlets, or food concessions operate overnight.

Security personnel advise travelers with overnight connections to arrange accommodation in nearby hotels, guesthouses, or beachfront resorts along Kent Avenue or Gloucester Avenue (Hip Strip), reachable within a 5-to-10-minute taxi ride from the airport.

Services and opening hours can change. If you plan to sleep in the public area, have a plan B: some airports only let passengers with a flight stay overnight.

Tips for a long layover

  1. Check whether you can leave the airport: it depends on your nationality, the visa rules of Jamaica and whether your bags are checked through.
  2. If you sleep airside, you will usually need a boarding pass for a flight that day. Ask your airline before you go through security.
  3. A lounge with day access can be cheaper than a hotel for a few hours: see VIP lounges at MBJ.
  4. Keep your valuables with you, set an alarm and carry a light layer: terminals are often cold at night.
  5. Going to a hotel in town? See transportation from MBJ (4.8 km to Montego Bay), and check which services run at night.
