Ground transportation options

Public transportation, licensed taxis and ride-hailing apps, private transfers and car rental at Kuala Lumpur airport (KUL), 45 km from Kuala Lumpur. See also the airport guide for general information.

Trains

The airport is linked to Kuala Lumpur city centre by two rail services operated by KLIA Ekspres. Stations are located on Level 1 of both terminals.

  • KLIA Ekspres: Direct service with no intermediate stops to KL Sentral station. Journey time is 28 minutes from Terminal 1 and 33 minutes from Terminal 2.
  • KLIA Transit: Stops at Salak Tinggi, Putrajaya & Cyberjaya and Bandar Tasik Selatan stations before terminating at KL Sentral in approximately 35-40 minutes.

Trains generally operate between 5:00 am and 12:00 am, with departures every 20 minutes during peak hours and every 30 minutes for the remainder of the day.

Buses

Several express and local bus services connect the airport with various strategic locations. Boarding points are located on Level 1 (Car Park Block C) in Terminal 1 and at the Transportation Hub on Level 1 in Terminal 2.

  • Airport Coach: Provides direct transfers to KL Sentral railway station.
  • Aerobus: Connects with KL Sentral, Genting Highlands, Paradigm Mall, AEON Mall and Bandar Penawar.
  • StarMart Express: Offers routes to destinations such as Melaka, Ipoh, Taiping and several locations in Singapore.
  • Jetbus: Operates services to Terminal Bersepadu Selatan (TBS) and Putra Heights.
  • SkyBus: Shuttle service to KL Sentral and Utama.
  • Other routes: Regional services operated by Airport Liner, Cityliner and Smart Selangor connect with outlying towns such as Nilai, Banting and Salak Tinggi.

Taxis

A regulated transport system is available, offering three main options. In Terminal 1, ticket counters are located on the arrivals levels, while in Terminal 2 they are situated within the Transportation Hub (Level 1).

  • Coupon Taxi: Passengers purchase a voucher with a fixed fare based on the final destination. This is the recommended option to avoid price fluctuations.
  • Metered Taxi: The final fare depends on distance and travel time, with an additional airport surcharge.
  • Premier and Executive Taxi: Higher-end or larger-capacity vehicles with different fare structures.

Ride-hailing Services

Grab is the leading ride-hailing platform in Malaysia. Passengers must book through the official app and proceed to the designated private vehicle pick-up points:

  • Terminal 1: Level 1, Gates 3 and 4.
  • Terminal 2: Level 1, Gate 5.

Tips for getting to and from KUL

Going to the airport

  1. Leave earlier than you think you need to: Kuala Lumpur airport is 45 km from Kuala Lumpur. Allow for rush-hour traffic, strikes or events, and check the local news before you go.
  2. On public transportation, check the schedule (weekends and holidays usually have fewer services), whether you need to change lines and how to pay: transit card, contactless or cash.
  3. If you booked a shared shuttle, keep the company's phone number at hand in case the pickup is late.
  4. Returning a rental car? Follow the signs to the rental car return area. If you drive your own car, check parking at KUL.

Leaving the airport

  1. After baggage claim and customs, follow the ground transportation signs. The arrivals page has a step-by-step guide.
  2. Arriving late at night? Not every bus or train runs 24 hours: check the last departure in advance. Ride-hailing apps usually pick up at a designated zone, not at the curb.
  3. With a private transfer, the driver usually waits in the arrivals hall with a sign with your name.
