Car hire requirements

To hire a car in the Solomon Islands, you must meet a set of standard requirements set by local rental agencies:

  • Minimum age: Generally, drivers must be at least 21 years old. Drivers under 25 may be subject to an additional “young driver” surcharge and restrictions on certain vehicle categories.
  • Driving licence: A valid driving licence from your country of residence must be presented. If the licence is not in the Roman alphabet, an International Driving Permit (IDP) is required.
  • Credit card: A credit card (Visa or MasterCard are the most widely accepted) in the name of the main driver is essential for the security deposit. Note that many agencies in this location do not accept debit cards or American Express.
  • Passport: Original identification document or passport to verify the renter’s identity.
  • Insurance: Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) is usually mandatory due to local road conditions.

Remember that in the Solomon Islands, driving is on the left-hand side of the road.

5 tips for renting a car abroad

What to consider:

  1. Make sure your driver's license is valid in the destination country. Some countries also require an International Driving Permit (IDP). Keep in mind that the IDP is not valid on its own: it must always be carried together with your national driver's license.
  2. Check the documents and insurance required by local traffic laws, and what coverage is included in your rental (collision damage waiver, third-party liability, deductible).
  3. Learn the traffic rules of the destination country: speed limits on highways and city streets, right of way at intersections without traffic lights, blood alcohol limits, tolls, etc.
  4. Check which side of the road traffic drives on, and whether the steering wheel is on the same side as in your home country.
  5. Know what to do if you are involved in a traffic accident: who to call, what to document and how to report it to the rental company.
