Requirements for Renting a Vehicle
Before picking up a rental car at the terminal, keep in mind the typical rental requirements and necessary documentation:
- Minimum age: The minimum age to rent is usually 21 or 25 years, depending on the rental company and vehicle category. Drivers aged 21 to 24 typically incur an additional young driver surcharge.
- Driver's license: An original, physical, and fully valid driver's license from your country of residence (usually held for at least 1 to 2 years). If the license is not in the Latin alphabet, an International Driving Permit is required alongside it.
- Passport or identification: A valid original passport (with an entry stamp into Guatemala for international travelers) or a Personal Identification Document (DPI) for Guatemalan citizens.
- Credit card: A physical international credit card in the primary driver's name with sufficient available limit to block the security deposit. Rental agencies generally do not accept debit cards or cash deposits for the pre-authorization hold.
- Insurance coverage: Mandatory basic third-party liability insurance and collision/theft protection (CDW/LDW). If you opt to decline insurance through your credit card provider, you must present an official coverage letter issued by your bank.
