Car Hire at Basel airport (BSL)
List of car rental agencies that operate within the Basel airport (BSL)
Subject to change: schedules, listed companies and contact details may change due to commercial decisions or operational updates, so it is always advisable to check availability on the official website of the car rental company before booking.
Car hire counters are located on Level 2 of the terminal, distributed between Hall 1 (French sector) and Hall 4 (Swiss sector). It is recommended to book in advance to ensure vehicle availability and speed up the pick-up process.
Requirements for hiring a vehicle
To hire a car at EuroAirport, the following general requirements must be met:
- Driving licence: Must be valid and original. If the licence was not issued by a European Union country or is not in Latin characters, an International Driving Permit is required.
- Identification: Original passport or valid national identity card.
- Credit Card: A credit card (not a debit card) in the name of the main driver is required for the security deposit hold.
- Minimum age: Generally 21 years old, although this may vary depending on the vehicle category. Drivers under 25 are usually subject to an additional “young driver” surcharge.
Given the airport’s border location, it is essential to inform the agency if you plan to drive across the three neighbouring countries (France, Switzerland and Germany) to ensure that the insurance provides full coverage and that the vehicle has the required equipment, such as the vignette for Swiss motorways.

5 tips for renting a car abroad
- Make sure your driver's license is valid in the destination country. Some countries also require an International Driving Permit (IDP). Keep in mind that the IDP is not valid on its own: it must always be carried together with your national driver's license.
- Check the documents and insurance required by local traffic laws, and what coverage is included in your rental (collision damage waiver, third-party liability, deductible).
- Learn the traffic rules of the destination country: speed limits on highways and city streets, right of way at intersections without traffic lights, blood alcohol limits, tolls, etc.
- Check which side of the road traffic drives on, and whether the steering wheel is on the same side as in your home country.
- Know what to do if you are involved in a traffic accident: who to call, what to document and how to report it to the rental company.
