Rental companies at the airport

Car rental companies operating at Mumbai airport (BOM) and where to find them. The airport is 26 km from Mumbai. See also the airport guide for general information.

Inside the airport, you will find car hire counters located in the arrivals areas of both terminals. In India, car hire services are generally offered in two formats: with a driver (the most recommended option due to the complexity of local traffic) and for self-drive use.

Requirements for hiring a vehicle

If you choose to hire a self-drive car, you will need to meet the following standard requirements applied by most rental agencies in India:

  • Driving licence: You must present a valid original driving licence issued in your country of origin.
  • International Driving Permit (IDP): Foreign visitors are required to present an International Driving Permit together with their national driving licence.
  • Passport and visa: The original passport with the entry stamp or a valid electronic visa must be provided.
  • Minimum age: Drivers are generally required to be at least 21 years old (some agencies require 23 or 25 years of age for higher vehicle categories).
  • Credit card: A credit card in the name of the main driver is required for the security deposit pre-authorisation.
  • Insurance: Comprehensive insurance cover is recommended due to Mumbai's heavy traffic conditions.

Note: Since driving in India is on the left-hand side and traffic in Mumbai is extremely dense and chaotic, the vast majority of travellers opt for car hire with a professional driver.

Companies, opening hours and desk locations can change. Check with the rental company before booking.

Tips for renting a car in India

  1. Check that your driver's license is valid in India. Some countries also ask for an International Driving Permit (IDP), which is only valid together with your national license.
  2. Review what the rental includes: collision damage waiver, third-party liability and the deductible. Most companies also hold a deposit on a credit card in the driver's name.
  3. Learn the local rules before you drive: speed limits, right of way, alcohol limits and tolls.
  4. In India traffic drives on the left: the steering wheel is on the right and roundabouts go clockwise.
  5. At pickup, photograph the car (inside and out) and the fuel level, and keep the photos until the deposit is returned.
  6. Know what to do in an accident: who to call, what to document and how to report it to the rental company.
