Connecting at Berlin Brandenburg airport

Connection time calculator, immigration and security, and how to move between terminals at BER.

How connections work at BER

At Berlin Brandenburg airport, passengers connecting between two international flights can usually stay in the transit area without going through immigration. If you connect from an international to a domestic flight, you enter the country here: you go through immigration and collect and re-check your bags.

The airport has 2 terminals or concourses (Terminal 1, Terminal 2).

Connecting passengers go through a transfer security screening.

Terminals / concourses: Terminal 1, Terminal 2

Getting between them: Walking between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 via level E0, a few minutes

Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 are a few minutes apart on foot. In Terminal 1, Schengen departures are on level E1 and non-Schengen departures on level E2. With carry-on only, arriving at Terminal 1, you can transfer without leaving the security area; with checked bags you collect them, check in again and go through security again.

An additional passport control applies when arriving from or departing to a non-Schengen destination.

  • Arriving at Terminal 2 from outside Schengen, or from Schengen with checked bags, you must leave the security area and pass security again.
  • Connecting between non-Schengen flights of Ryanair or Wizz Air requires a German entry document (BER has two separate non-Schengen areas).
  • The viaBER info counter is in Terminal 1 on level E1, in the Market Place.

Estimate based on typical times at this airport, not your airline's official minimum connection time. Immigration and security lines change with the time of day and season. On a single ticket, the airline must rebook you if you miss the connection; on separate tickets, it does not.
