Requirements for Hiring a Vehicle in Spain

To hire a car in Spain, the following requirements usually apply:

  • Minimum Age: You must be over 21 years old. Some companies may require a minimum age of 23 or 25 for certain vehicle types, or apply a young driver surcharge (under 25 years old).
  • Valid Driving Licence: You must hold a valid driving licence with at least one or two years’ experience, depending on the company. If the licence is not issued by a country of the European Union or the European Economic Area, an International Driving Permit (IDP) may be required.
  • Credit Card: A credit card in the name of the main driver is required for the security deposit. Debit cards are generally not accepted for this purpose.
  • Identity Document: A valid ID card (for EU citizens) or passport (for non-EU citizens) is required.

It is advisable to check the specific requirements with the chosen hire company at the time of booking.

5 tips for renting a car abroad

What to consider:

  1. Make sure your driver's license is valid in the destination country. Some countries also require an International Driving Permit (IDP). Keep in mind that the IDP is not valid on its own: it must always be carried together with your national driver's license.
  2. Check the documents and insurance required by local traffic laws, and what coverage is included in your rental (collision damage waiver, third-party liability, deductible).
  3. Learn the traffic rules of the destination country: speed limits on highways and city streets, right of way at intersections without traffic lights, blood alcohol limits, tolls, etc.
  4. Check which side of the road traffic drives on, and whether the steering wheel is on the same side as in your home country.
  5. Know what to do if you are involved in a traffic accident: who to call, what to document and how to report it to the rental company.
