Trains

The Zürich Flughafen station is located beneath the Airport Center, offering one of the most efficient connections in Europe. It is the fastest option for travelling both to the city centre and to other regions of Switzerland.

  • S-Bahn and regional trains: Lines S2, S16 and S24 connect to Zurich Central Station (Zürich HB) in approximately 10–12 minutes, with services running every few minutes.
  • Long-distance: InterCity (IC) and InterRegio (IR) trains offer direct connections without transfers to cities such as Basel, Bern, Geneva, Lausanne, Lucerne and St. Gallen.

Tickets can be purchased from the automatic machines located in the customs halls and in the station area, or at the SBB Travel Centre located in Check-in 3. The use of the official SBB app is recommended for checking real-time timetables.

Trams

The Glattalbahn tram network operates from the terminal located in front of the Airport Center, providing an ideal alternative for reaching suburban neighbourhoods and business districts:

  • Line 10: Connects the airport with the central station (Zürich HB) via Glattpark, Oerlikon and Irchel. Journey time is around 35 minutes.
  • Line 12: Runs towards Stettbach station, providing access to the Glattbrugg and Wallisellen areas.

Buses

The regional bus terminal is located next to car park P2. More than 15 lines from the ZVV network connect the airport with various destinations in the Glattal and Zürcher Unterland regions. Notable lines include 768 (towards Oerlikon) and 759 (towards Wangen and Dübendorf).

During the winter season, specialised Ski Bus services operate between the airport and major ski resorts in the Swiss Alps, such as Davos and Arlberg. These services usually require advance booking through the respective operators.

Taxis and Transfers

Official taxi ranks are located in front of arrivals halls 1 and 2. The main operator is Airport Taxi Zürich, whose vehicles accept major credit cards. The journey to Zurich city centre takes between 15 and 20 minutes.

Private limousine services and ride-sharing platforms are also available, operating from designated pick-up areas clearly signposted within the terminal.

Transportation Tips to/from the airport

Some of these tips may seem obvious, but they are worth keeping in mind when traveling to or from the airport, especially if you are using public transportation.
 
 1 - To the airport: leave a little earlier than usually recommended. If you take a taxi or a private car service, allow for rush hour traffic, demonstrations, strikes or events that could delay your trip. It always helps to check the local news before you leave.
 
If you book a shared shuttle, keep the company's contact number handy in case the pickup is late. These services usually confirm a scheduled pickup time in advance.
 
If you use public transportation (bus or train), check the schedules (weekends and holidays usually have less frequent service), whether you need to transfer, and how to pay the fare (a transit card, or cash to the driver). These details seem obvious, but knowing them ahead of time can save you from a delay that could cause problems.
 
If you drive a rental car to the airport, check where to return it. Many airports have a dedicated rental car return area.
 
 2 - From the airport: this part is less stressful, since there is no risk of missing a flight. At worst, you will reach your hotel or meeting point a little later than planned.
 
Once you leave the plane, collect your baggage and complete any required arrival procedures. Then follow the signs for ground transportation or ask airport staff.
 
Check bus and train schedules in advance if you arrive late at night, since not all services run 24 hours. The same applies to taxis. If you plan to use a ride-hailing app such as Uber, have it ready on your phone to contact the driver.
 
If you booked a private transfer, a driver will usually be waiting for you with a sign. If you are renting a car, booking in advance gives you more peace of mind. Rental counters are usually located in the arrivals hall.
