List of car rental agencies that operate within the Zurich airport (ZRH)

Subject to change: schedules, listed companies and contact details may change due to commercial decisions or operational updates, so it is always advisable to check availability on the official website of the car rental company before booking.

Car hire offices are centrally located on level 1 of the Airport Center (Airport Shopping area). All major companies operate in this sector, making it easy to complete formalities and access the vehicles, which are located in car park P3.

When returning the vehicle, follow the signs for "Car Rental Return" to car park P3. If you plan to cross borders into neighbouring countries, make sure to inform the hire company in advance to confirm that the insurance provides international coverage and whether the vehicle has the required motorway vignette.

Requirements for Hiring a Vehicle

To hire a car in Switzerland, you will generally need to meet the following standard requirements:

  • Driving licence: You must present a valid driving licence held for at least one year. If your licence is not in the Latin alphabet (e.g. Arabic, Chinese or Cyrillic), an International Driving Permit (IDP) is required.
  • Minimum age: Most agencies require drivers to be at least 20 or 21 years old. Note that drivers under 25 are usually subject to an additional "young driver" surcharge.
  • Identification: Original passport or valid identity document.
  • Credit card: A credit card in the name of the main driver is mandatory for the security deposit (excess hold). Most agencies do not accept debit cards or cash for this purpose.
  • Insurance: Although basic third-party liability insurance is usually included, it is advisable to check coverage for collision damage (CDW) and theft.

5 tips for renting a car abroad

What to consider:

  1. Make sure your driver's license is valid in the destination country. Some countries also require an International Driving Permit (IDP). Keep in mind that the IDP is not valid on its own: it must always be carried together with your national driver's license.
  2. Check the documents and insurance required by local traffic laws, and what coverage is included in your rental (collision damage waiver, third-party liability, deductible).
  3. Learn the traffic rules of the destination country: speed limits on highways and city streets, right of way at intersections without traffic lights, blood alcohol limits, tolls, etc.
  4. Check which side of the road traffic drives on, and whether the steering wheel is on the same side as in your home country.
  5. Know what to do if you are involved in a traffic accident: who to call, what to document and how to report it to the rental company.
