Ground transportation options

Public transportation, licensed taxis and ride-hailing apps, private transfers and car rental at Sofia airport (SOF), 10 km from Sofí­a. See also the airport guide for general information.

Metro

The airport station is located on the east side of Terminal 2. To reach it, follow the blue line on the floor in the public area of the building.

Line 1 of BDZ (Tel +359 2 931 1111) travels to Sofia city centre (18-minute journey) and provides direct transport to the residential areas of Druzhba, Mladost, Zapaden Park and Lyulin. It operates from 5:30 am to 0:00 am.

At Serdika station, Line 2 can be taken to the city’s central bus and train terminals in around 30 minutes.

At Iskarsko Shosse there are connections to the Sofia–Plovdiv and Sofia–Karlovo railway lines.

Bus

There are three services run by the Urban Mobility Centre (Tel +359 700 13 233) that operate during the day.

Lines 84 and 184 stop at both terminals and head towards Christopher Columbus Blvd., Tsarigradsko Shose Blvd., and Gen. Gurko Str. in the city centre. They run from 4:41 am to 0:17 am. The journey time is 35–45 minutes.

Route 384 connects Terminal 2 from 5:50 am to 11:25 pm with Christopher Columbus Blvd. and the Druzhba 1 and 2 metro stations, with a journey time of 25–30 minutes.

Tickets can be purchased from a vending machine located in the Arrivals Hall of Terminal 1.

Taxi

The official airport operator is Yellow! (Tel +359 29 11 19), with offices in the Arrivals Halls of both terminals. The journey to the city centre takes about 15 minutes. It is recommended not to use services offered elsewhere to avoid fraud.

Tips for getting to and from SOF

Going to the airport

  1. Leave earlier than you think you need to: Sofia airport is 10 km from Sofí­a. Allow for rush-hour traffic, strikes or events, and check the local news before you go.
  2. On public transportation, check the schedule (weekends and holidays usually have fewer services), whether you need to change lines and how to pay: transit card, contactless or cash.
  3. If you booked a shared shuttle, keep the company's phone number at hand in case the pickup is late.
  4. Returning a rental car? Follow the signs to the rental car return area. If you drive your own car, check parking at SOF.

Leaving the airport

  1. After baggage claim and customs, follow the ground transportation signs. The arrivals page has a step-by-step guide.
  2. Arriving late at night? Not every bus or train runs 24 hours: check the last departure in advance. Ride-hailing apps usually pick up at a designated zone, not at the curb.
  3. With a private transfer, the driver usually waits in the arrivals hall with a sign with your name.
