Connecting at Milan Malpensa airport

Connection time calculator, immigration and security, and how to move between terminals at MXP.

How connections work at MXP

At Milan Malpensa airport, passengers connecting between two international flights can usually stay in the transit area without going through immigration.

The airport has 4 terminals or concourses (Terminal 1 (A, Schengen), Terminal 1 (B, non-Schengen), Terminal 1 (C, Schengen long-haul), Terminal 2). They are not connected after security: changing means going through security again.

Terminals / concourses: Terminal 1 (A, Schengen), Terminal 1 (B, non-Schengen), Terminal 1 (C, Schengen long-haul), Terminal 2

Getting between them: Free shuttle bus between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 every 7 to 15 minutes (10 to 15 minute ride); the Malpensa Express train also links them in about 7 minutes

In Terminal 1, concourse A handles Schengen regional flights, B non-Schengen flights and C Schengen long-haul flights. Terminal 2 (mainly easyJet) is separate: there are no protected connections there and you must clear security again.

Passport control applies between the Schengen (A, C) and non-Schengen (B) areas of Terminal 1.

  • Terminal 1 minimum connection time: 60 minutes, domestic and international.
  • Non-Schengen passport control can take about 30 minutes at peak times.
  • easyJet flights in Terminal 2 are point to point: self-transfers mean leaving, re-checking bags and going through security again.

Estimate based on typical times at this airport, not your airline's official minimum connection time. Immigration and security lines change with the time of day and season. On a single ticket, the airline must rebook you if you miss the connection; on separate tickets, it does not.
