Requirements to Hire a Vehicle
To hire a car in Malta, you will generally need to meet the following requirements and take into account the country’s driving specifics:
- Documentation: You must present a valid passport or identity document and a valid driving licence held for at least 1 or 2 years (depending on the company). If your licence is not issued in the EU, it is recommended to carry an International Driving Permit.
- Minimum age: Most agencies require a minimum age of 21. Drivers under the age of 25 are usually subject to an additional “young driver” surcharge.
- Credit Card: A credit card in the name of the main driver is required to block the security deposit.
- Driving on the left: Remember that driving in Malta is on the left-hand side of the road, a legacy of its British past.

5 tips for renting a car abroad
- Make sure your driver's license is valid in the destination country. Some countries also require an International Driving Permit (IDP). Keep in mind that the IDP is not valid on its own: it must always be carried together with your national driver's license.
