How connections work at KIX

At Osaka Kansai airport, passengers connecting between two international flights can usually stay in the transit area without going through immigration. If you connect from an international to a domestic flight, you enter the country here: you go through immigration and collect and re-check your bags.

The airport has 2 terminals or concourses (Terminal 1, Terminal 2). They are not connected after security: changing means going through security again.

Terminals / concourses: Terminal 1, Terminal 2

Getting between them: Free 24/7 shuttle bus between Aeroplaza, Terminal 1 and Terminal 2: 7 to 9 minute ride, every 3 to 6 minutes during the day

Terminal 1 (main airlines) and Terminal 2 (low-cost carriers such as Peach or Jeju Air) are about 4 km apart and not connected airside. Changing terminals means exiting landside, taking the free shuttle bus, re-checking bags and clearing security again.

Official transfer times:

  • Terminal 1 → Terminal 2 (shuttle bus ride): up to 9 min by bus
  • International to international in the same terminal: no immigration, bags transferred automatically, only a security check (15 to 25 minutes).
  • Domestic to international takes 30 to 55 minutes and international to domestic 40 to 65 minutes, with baggage claim, passport control and security.
  • Allow 20 to 30 minutes just to get from your gate to the shuttle and the other terminal; if your connection changes between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, budget at least 2 to 3 hours in total.
