Public transportation services, licensed taxis and rideshare, private transfer companies and car rental services in El Salvador airport (SAL)

 Transportation

The airport is located approximately 40 kilometers (25 miles) south of the metropolitan area and is primarily connected via the Comalapa Highway (RN-5). To travel to the capital or to the coastal tourist destinations, you have several transportation options:

Taxis

Official taxi stands are located immediately outside the terminal building, in the arrivals area. The authorized cooperative that operates permanently at the airport is Taxis Acacya, which has service desks inside the arrivals hall where you can check the official fares by zone and arrange the service before exiting to the curb. Travel time to downtown or the hotel district of San Salvador is typically between 40 and 50 minutes, depending on traffic conditions.

App-based services (Ride-sharing)

Uber operates at the airport. Once you have collected your baggage, you can request a ride directly through the mobile app. The app will indicate the designated pickup point in the outdoor areas near the parking lot where you can meet your driver. For safety reasons, always verify that the license plate and vehicle model match the information shown in the app before getting in.

Buses and private transfers

For public transportation or pre-arranged transfer services, the following options are available:

  • Public bus (Route 138): This is the most economical public transportation option. It connects the area outside the airport (with a stop along the highway) to the Southern Bus Terminal in San Salvador, with a journey time of approximately 60 to 90 minutes.
  • Minibuses and tourist transportation: Authorized companies such as Transporte Acopacific provide minibus and direct executive transfer services to hotels in San Salvador and various departments throughout the country from their coordination points at the terminal.
  • Transfers to beach areas (Surf City): Local operators and agencies such as Sunzal Surf Company offer direct transfers to the main coastal destinations in the department of La Libertad, including Playa El Tunco, El Sunzal, El Zonte, Mizata, and Las Flores, with an average travel time of 40 to 60 minutes.
  • Long-distance: Transporte del Sol operates routes from San Salvador to destinations such as Guatemala City and Managua International Airport.

Transportation Tips to/from the airport

Some of these tips may seem obvious, but they are worth keeping in mind when traveling to or from the airport, especially if you are using public transportation.

1 - To the airport: leave a little earlier than usually recommended. If you take a taxi or a private car service, allow for rush hour traffic, demonstrations, strikes or events that could delay your trip. It always helps to check the local news before you leave.

If you book a shared shuttle, keep the company's contact number handy in case the pickup is late. These services usually confirm a scheduled pickup time in advance.

If you use public transportation (bus or train), check the schedules (weekends and holidays usually have less frequent service), whether you need to transfer, and how to pay the fare (a transit card, or cash to the driver). These details seem obvious, but knowing them ahead of time can save you from a delay that could cause problems.

If you drive a rental car to the airport, check where to return it. Many airports have a dedicated rental car return area.

2 - From the airport: this part is less stressful, since there is no risk of missing a flight. At worst, you will reach your hotel or meeting point a little later than planned.

Once you leave the plane, collect your baggage and complete any required arrival procedures. Then follow the signs for ground transportation or ask airport staff.

Check bus and train schedules in advance if you arrive late at night, since not all services run 24 hours. The same applies to taxis. If you plan to use a ride-hailing app such as Uber, have it ready on your phone to contact the driver.

If you booked a private transfer, a driver will usually be waiting for you with a sign. If you are renting a car, booking in advance gives you more peace of mind. Rental counters are usually located in the arrivals hall.
