Connecting at Cairo airport

Connection time calculator, immigration and security, and how to move between terminals at CAI.

How connections work at CAI

At Cairo airport, passengers connecting between two international flights can usually stay in the transit area without going through immigration.

The airport has 3 terminals or concourses (Terminal 1, Terminal 2, Terminal 3).

Connecting passengers go through a transfer security screening.

Terminals / concourses: Terminal 1, Terminal 2, Terminal 3

Getting between them: Enclosed walkway between Terminals 2 and 3; free inter-terminal shuttle bus about every 15 to 20 minutes

Terminals 2 and 3 are joined by an enclosed passageway (5 to 10 minutes on foot), usually usable airside on one ticket with bags checked through, especially on EgyptAir or Star Alliance. Terminal 1 almost always requires a vehicle transfer and often a landside process.

Official transfer times:

  • Terminal 2 → Terminal 3 (enclosed walkway): up to 10 min walking
  • Same ticket within Terminals 2 and 3: about 90 minutes is workable, 2 hours comfortable; anything involving Terminal 1: 4 hours or more.
  • Changing terminals landside or collecting bags counts as entering Egypt, so visa rules apply.

Estimate based on typical times at this airport, not your airline's official minimum connection time. Immigration and security lines change with the time of day and season. On a single ticket, the airline must rebook you if you miss the connection; on separate tickets, it does not.
